Capacity planning of IP networks and optical networks: the case of the Spanish academic network RedIRIS (DIOR)

This project aims at the evaluation of the foreseen traffic evolution within the Spanish academic network RedIRIS, by means of extensive traffic analysis.

The overall objective is to find empirical rules for dimensioning the network links, with the aim of increasing their residual life until saturation.

Furthermore, the design of such rules is intended to be applied to IP over WDM networks, since optical networks have arisen as a promising backbone technology. Hence, it is also a goal of this project to evaluate the benefits and implementation feasibility of optical circuits and optical burst/packet switching techniques as potential transfer and switching modes for RedIRIS.
